Saturday the 12th of March.....Wow, What a day! The 135th Race meeting held at the historic Hinnomunjie race track, was a sure winner! Sunshine, warm, but not hot, a sensational track (the best ever!) that had about 20 mil of rain the day before, a light breeze, well presented horses, and a strong crowd made the race day on the Omeo High Plains just perfect. Cool Scene from the Manning Stables, trained and owned by Alec and Reg Manning took out the main race of the day, the Benambra Hotel 'Brian Delany' Hinnomunjie Cup. And how good did the Manning horses look, just as good as the entrants who participated in Fashions on the Field. A large number of participants in Little Filly and Colt, to Lady of the Day and Mr Dapper. A local lady, Janelle Buckley was a 'back to back winner' taking out Lady of the Day (2010 and 2011), and a handsome stranger from Italy took out Mr Dapper. The judges were impressed by young Italiano, who has been traveling around the world, with a suit in his back pack. The Lady's were simply impressed with the accent, and his good looks and charm. The free activities for the kids charmed the parents and entertained the kids. Face painting by Sue was simply amazing, the jumping castle kept them busy, and the foot races and lolly scramble kept them competitive. As always planes have been a long tradition at the Hinnomunjie Races, however the motorised ones have been replace by kids toys. The Toyworld Airplane fly off was a huge success and a feature of the day, so too was the Lady's hobby horse race, despite the first two home being disqualified. I am sure the ladies will be back next year to race again. We look forward to seeing our members, sponsors, races goers, trainers, jockeys, horse owners ...and our new friends back next year. Make sure you put Saturday the 10th of March 2012 in your diary and why not bring along a few friends and introduce them to the Hinnomunjie experience, on the Omeo High Plains. ODRC - 14 March 2011

With a 135th years of racing at Hinnomunjie, there sure is a load of history! This year we will be compiling stories, your stories, about the historic Hinnomunjie Picnic Races, with so many people, and families involved over the past 135th years, it’s time we wrote a book! The Fay, Hales, Kane, Kennelly and Moore families celebrated their 40th anniversary last year, making the annual journey from Canberra and Sydney, and other places too. The Matthews family, have a long association with the Club, right there from the start. Mick was the President of the club for many years starting in the late 1940's. This year we remember Graham Connley, ‘Rusty’ Connley he was known. Rusty was President for 18 years, and a member for 30. We honour his outstanding commitment. Dan Cook started back in 1842. He even rode in the Melbourne Cup, not once but twice. Riding 'Diana" and "Louis Napoleon'. Six generations on, the Cook family are still very much involved. Look out for 'Cookie' in his Kubota tractor, moving the stalls here and there. Paul Langham, the Race Caller, we celebrate his 25th year of calling at the Hinnomunjie races, I am sure he has seen a thing or two on the Omeo High Plains. And just recently, The Hinnomunjie Races has been a place to find love. A few young girls from Melbourne searching for love, thought they would check out the Country blokes,… and as it turned out they liked what they saw. After a first meeting on the Omeo High Plains, trackside, love was born, with a marriage within 12 months,… we are waiting for more news to come? With sickness, love sickness, occurring trackside, a good Doctor is needed. Dr Ian Paterson has been the regular Doctor at the race meeting for the past 25 years, and is back again this year to keep all in prime condition. As you can see allot of history and good times have been had at the Hinnomunjie Racecourse. What's your story? Let me know and we will make history, turn into pages of good reading. 2011 Rain, Sun, and a GREAT TRACK!! Preparations are underway for this year's picnic race meeting, March the 12th. All the rain experienced across Australia has been kind, very kind to the Hinnomunjie Race Track. This year the course is looking the best ever, with lush green grass, a soft track, and new growth on all the trees. As usual Joe is busy going, around and around, cutting grass and caring for the fine-tuned track. However the support of John Cook, and the MCAV committee, has made his work so much easier. Thanks John and co. The Mountain Cattlemen of Victoria held their annual Get-together at the Historic Hinnomunjie Race Course, what a transformation! The very successful event saw thousands of horse goers, dog high jumpers, wood choppers, singers, poets, and all those that care passionately about the High Country bush. The MCAV Committee acknowledged the passing of Rusty Connley, and we will too. The Omeo District Race Club will remember our fine President who held the seat for 13 years, and a member for much longer. Rusty will be sadly missed by soo many. The Hinnomunjie Races has a long tradition, with families travelling from all parts of Australia. We look forward to seeing you soon, and bring a friend or two, country hospitality spreads far. Don’t forget the Calf Sales of the Omeo High Plains on the following Tuesday, and meet a few more locals! ODRC - 22 February 2011 ______________________________________________________________ Hinnomunjie Race Course & Recreation Reserve – Site of 2011 Get-together
The reserve has always been Crown Land for the recreational use of local people. It is governed by a Committee of Management who periodically lease the land to young farmers for sheep grazing.
The Hinnomunjie Picnic Races were established there in 1876 with horses coming from afar to participate. It once had a grandstand for patrons to view the races but that was removed in the 1960s. The race event still continues each year on the Saturday of the March Labour Day weekend.
During the 1950s the Hinnomunjie Golf Club was established by local cattlemen Doug Gibson, Alan McKenzie and Jack Cook (father of our current Get-together coordinator John Cook) and was a thriving club until around 1970 when the Omeo Golf Club reestablished in Omeo.
It was once the home of the Benambra Football Club and Hinnomunjie Tennis Club. The Shire of Omeo combined primary school sports were held there on alternate years.
Fond memories of numerous dances and other social functions held at the Hinnomunjie Hall are often recalled by locals.
The Hinnomunjie Riding Club was established here as well as the Hinnomunjie Campdraft Association which raises funds for our association from their annual campdraft. Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria, Anne Faithfull, Treasurer 04 January 2011
135 th Hinnomunjie Races – Saturday 12th March The Hinnomunjie Races is off and running again; this year marks the Omeo District Race Club’s (ODRC) 135th Race meeting.
The Omeo District Race Club has a lot of work ahead of us to meet the standards required, and would require approximately 1,000 people to attend our race day. So bring along your friends and family as we have a big target to meet! Also further upgrades of the facility will be required.
